Symphonic Rain

Sculptor: Jim Bond

About the sculpture and photograph:

‘Symphonic rain’ is a kinetic water sound sculpture which runs on solar and wind power. Rain is collected by a large steel funnel and stored in a central recycled storage tank. Every fifteen minutes the water is then released via programmed solenoids into twelve balanced cups. As the cups fill they tip and their arms hit a series of cymbals creating rhythmic sound from the captured rain.

The photograph was taken at the mill complex where piece was constructed. Measuring up to three metres in height, Symphonic Rain is an imposing piece. Lighting techniques and camera angles were used to add to its presence in the image.
