I am a Clinical Creative Director supporting graphic designers, illustrators, animators and video editors in the creation of medical educational materials. I work closely with physicians to create imagery (films, photography, illustration and animations etc.) to effectively describe, educate and explain medical techniques, procedures and concepts. This work is regularly presented internationally. Furthermore, I provided the film editing for two interactive educational medical eBooks.

Photographing a medical procedure in Madrid, Spain. The operation involved x-ray radiation that required lead-lined protective clothing to be worn.
I am also a photographer and filmmaker.
After studying art at college, I specialised in photography and was mentored by award-winning photographer and photographic printer Terry Cryer (b.1934–d.2017). He encouraged me to envisage and consider how a final image was going to look, before even pressing the camera shutter. Almost like a thought experiment. I found it intriguing that although photography is essentially capturing a moment in time, to help capture the true essence of the subject, you need to consider a future event, i.e. the processing and creation of the final image. Visualising the final result is something I still practise, both as a photographer/filmmaker, and when providing clinical creative direction.

Terry Cryer’s biography ‘One In The Eye’. Terry added a couple of messages before giving the book to me.
When working with artists (as with physicians), it is important that I gain a deeper understanding of the meaning, rational and message behind their work. This provides me with the opportunity to convey, enhance and potentially extend the original narrative of the piece, creating a final image that has more depth than just a photographic record. As with my educational work, my intention is to create imagery that educates, conveys a message or explanation, and ultimately provides the viewer with a deeper understanding.

In 2019 I had my first exhibition ‘The Golden Aerialist’; a collaboration with UK artist and sculptor Hannah Honeywill MA. The exhibition was centered around a film we produced showing the process involved in the creation of a sculpture of the same name. The exhibition also included an indoor and outdoor photographic exhibition, depicting five other sculptures previously created by Hannah. The finished Golden Aerialist sculpture was also exhibited. The exhibition was commissioned by Hebden Bridge Arts Festival in partnership with The National Trust.
